A Wartime Journey: Bail-out Over Belgium, WW II
A personal and powerfully told military memoir

Intellectual Book

One of the most exiting War Stories I have ever readIt is a compelling fast moving thriller which cannot fail to grip the reader. It would make a fantastic feature film - one that would make Saving Private Ryan seen tame by comparison.
The story takes place across the Nazi-ravaged countryside of wartime Belgium where a British deserter, Wally Shaw, is on the run, fleeing the fighting and the painful memories that haunt him. Military Police hot on his trail, he plunges into hiding - to find himself in company with three German deserters. The ill-matched quartet team up to form an uneasy alliance. Dodging compatriot and foe alike, the allies rely on black marketeering in the red light district for their livelihood - but they soon find it's rewards less that they might have wished, and together they hatch an incredible plot. Following a dramatic coup in which they rescue from prison Wally's American friend Les Harris, a skillful forger - and in which one of them is killed in the ensuing shoot-out - the allies set forth across Europe on their dangerous mission.
In a concentration camp deep in the heart of Germany, SS General Kaltenbrunner is overseeing the printing of millions of Pounds worth of British bank notes with which to flood and destroy the English economy. The allies' plan is childishly simple: to steal the perfect forgeries, with the help of the beautiful Irene, at the Reich Security Headquarters, and escape to Sweden as millionaires, to spend the rest of their lives in the lap of luxury. But carrying out the plan is less simple: and ingenious as the allies are, fate takes some curious turns, culminating in a breath-taking final scenario.

Burn Your Clothes!"Belgian Fashion Design" tracks all of today's major Belgian fashion designers, from Ann Demeulemeester to Veronique Branquinho, and some lesser known designers; from conception of an idea to the runway, or swimming pool (depending on where the designer decides to show his or her collection).
This book has hundreds of great color and b&w photos spanning the last two decades, as well as interviews with the designers giving insite to their ideas, inspirations and reasons for designing.
"Belgian Fashion Design" is a must have for any design professional, design student or anyone who thinks clothing is more than protection of the body from the elements.
I have a dear friend, Diet Eman, who was hunted by the Gestapo, for her work in the Resistance, helping Jews and Allied flyers. She and her fiance' were eventually captured. He died in Dauchau, but managed to slip one last love letter from the cattle car as they were taken to Germany, "Even if we never see each other again this side of heaven, we will never regret this work we have done." I cannot but marvel at the courage of such as these. Diet's own story is told in the book, Things We Couldn't Say. You cannot but appreciate each the more, for reading the other. I highly recommend both.
