A Wartime Journey: Bail-out Over Belgium, WW II
How many of these stories have gone to the grave untold? Far too many. Of that time when ordinary men picked up the gauntlet, and accepted the challenge of saving the world from unspeakable evil, Bill took the enemy head-on, through the sights of a 50-caliber mounted in the ball-turret of a B-24 Liberator. True to its name, this plane played a pivotal role in the liberation and to this day, those who remember the boot of tyranny on their necks, raise a glass to those who joined the fight. If the story ended there, it would be worthy of the telling, but Cupp's plane went down in flames, and he hit the ground running. In his own words, "This tale is meant to honor the patriotism, the courage, and the kindness of those stalwart people---all those civilians of enemy-occupied territory, who hid, fed, and clothed me. They richly deserve recognition." Drawing from notes kept in a hand-sewn book of cigarette wrappers, he chronicles the escape, evasion, capture and eventually his own liberation. The finest of steel and gold are brought out by repeatedly drawing it through the fire; so too, with men.

I have a dear friend, Diet Eman, who was hunted by the Gestapo, for her work in the Resistance, helping Jews and Allied flyers. She and her fiance' were eventually captured. He died in Dauchau, but managed to slip one last love letter from the cattle car as they were taken to Germany, "Even if we never see each other again this side of heaven, we will never regret this work we have done." I cannot but marvel at the courage of such as these. Diet's own story is told in the book, Things We Couldn't Say. You cannot but appreciate each the more, for reading the other. I highly recommend both.

A personal and powerfully told military memoir
A Wartime Journey: Bail-Out Over Belgium World War II is the personal story of William L. Cupp, an aviation turret gunner whose plane went down over enemy territory. Cupp's harrowing saga and struggle for survival, of being aided by the Belgian and French Resistance, and his harrowing time spent as a prisoner of war of the Third Reich, is vividly and emotionally chronicled in this personal and powerfully told military memoir. A Wartime Journey is a much appreciated and highly recommended contribution to the growing library of World War II military memoirs and autobiographies from a generation which is now rapidly passing from among us.

The Allies (Thorndike Large Print General Series)
Published in Paperback by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (September, 1999)
Author: Maurice Sellar
Average review score:

One of the most exiting War Stories I have ever read
This is an action packed World War II story full of thrilling adventure with one, final sardonic twist. Here is a war novel, not about heroics, but about embittered men whose only concern has become their own survival.

It is a compelling fast moving thriller which cannot fail to grip the reader. It would make a fantastic feature film - one that would make Saving Private Ryan seen tame by comparison.

The story takes place across the Nazi-ravaged countryside of wartime Belgium where a British deserter, Wally Shaw, is on the run, fleeing the fighting and the painful memories that haunt him. Military Police hot on his trail, he plunges into hiding - to find himself in company with three German deserters. The ill-matched quartet team up to form an uneasy alliance. Dodging compatriot and foe alike, the allies rely on black marketeering in the red light district for their livelihood - but they soon find it's rewards less that they might have wished, and together they hatch an incredible plot. Following a dramatic coup in which they rescue from prison Wally's American friend Les Harris, a skillful forger - and in which one of them is killed in the ensuing shoot-out - the allies set forth across Europe on their dangerous mission.

In a concentration camp deep in the heart of Germany, SS General Kaltenbrunner is overseeing the printing of millions of Pounds worth of British bank notes with which to flood and destroy the English economy. The allies' plan is childishly simple: to steal the perfect forgeries, with the help of the beautiful Irene, at the Reich Security Headquarters, and escape to Sweden as millionaires, to spend the rest of their lives in the lap of luxury. But carrying out the plan is less simple: and ingenious as the allies are, fate takes some curious turns, culminating in a breath-taking final scenario.

Rewritten/republished as Travel&Leisure:Amsterdam
The American Express Travel Guide of Amsterdam (1992), written by Derek Blythe, has been re-written by Carol Winkelman and re-published as Travel&Leisure: Amsterdam (1997). Travel&Leisure magazine, in conjunction with Macmillan Travel, designed this new version of the book for a larger audience that includes young travelers, budget travelers, babyboomer travelers, discriminating travelers, and business travelers. The new book is a combination of traditional and offbeat travel guide, helping the reader find his/her way to hotels, restaurants, museums, and historical sites while also taking him/her "inside" Amsterdam to experience its cafe culture, lively arts scene, and famous nightlife. The new book, like The American Express Guide, includes an excursion to Rotterdam that leads the reader from the historic to the ultramodern.

EXCELLENT BATLE STUDY
This superb work from the British Government Publ, HMSO, traces in great detail with the addition of excellent color fold out maps, the wars and battles fought in this area of France. Covered are Waterloo 1815, Mons & Le Cateau 1914. lst and 3rd battle of Ypres 1914 / 17, and the British Arras counter-attack in 1940. London 1995, HMSO, paper ed , 7 1/2 x 9 1/2, 222 pp, many illus & numerous color fold out maps. Each chapter Is organized on a similar pattern, with an introduction, which suggests why the battle is worth studying; followed by a long background narrative which puts the action in its proper context. After a description of the battle itself, comes a section which relates to the ground as it now lies to the events which took place on it. Armed with this book, which combines in-depth analysis of these four actions with explanation of the ground today, the visitor to the battlefields will be able to conduct his own battlefield tour.

Baedeker's Netherlands (Baedeker's Travel Guides)
Published in Paperback by Baedekers Guides (26 December, 2000)
Author: Baedeker's Guides
Average review score:

Good all-purpose guidebook
Unlike many guidebooks on the Netherlands that only highlight major cities, this book lists practically every city in the country. If you are looking to see the real Netherlands (beyond Amsterdam) this is the book. It also has really good color photos and a bonus fold-out map. My travel agent recommended the Baedeker series as the 'definitive' guidebook series, and the one he uses himself.

Burn Your Clothes!
It's time that we see fashion as more than just clothing. Fashion is who we are or who we want to be. Fashion is thoughtful. Fashion is many things to many people as seen in the designs shown in this book.

"Belgian Fashion Design" tracks all of today's major Belgian fashion designers, from Ann Demeulemeester to Veronique Branquinho, and some lesser known designers; from conception of an idea to the runway, or swimming pool (depending on where the designer decides to show his or her collection).

This book has hundreds of great color and b&w photos spanning the last two decades, as well as interviews with the designers giving insite to their ideas, inspirations and reasons for designing.

"Belgian Fashion Design" is a must have for any design professional, design student or anyone who thinks clothing is more than protection of the body from the elements.
